Extraordinary Meridians for Yoga teachers : Moxa techniques for the Ren & Du Channels
Unlocking the Extraordinary: A Practical Introduction to the Ren & Du Channels with Moxibustion
There is a layer of the body that lies beneath the familiar pathways of the primary meridians – a deeper, more ancestral network known as the Extraordinary Channels. These vessels are not just energetic highways; they are reservoirs of essence, regulators of our constitutional strength, and gateways to profound healing.
In this upcoming workshop, we’ll explore two of the most influential of these channels: the Ren (Conception Vessel) and the Du (Governing Vessel). Together, they form the central axis of the body, balancing yin and yang, front and back, nourishment and activation. The Ren is often referred to as the Sea of yin and the Du the Sea of Yang. When balanced and in harmony, together they create a powerful foundation for optimal well being.
Why the Extraordinary Channels Matter
Unlike the primary meridians, the Extraordinary Channels are not tied to specific organs in the same way. Instead, they act as regulators – absorbing excess, supplying deficiency, and harmonising deeper imbalances that often underlie chronic conditions.
The Ren Mai governs all yin in the body. It nourishes, cools, and anchors. It is deeply connected to fertility, hormonal balance, and emotional regulation.
The Du Mai, by contrast, governs all yang. It activates, warms, and protects. It plays a central role in spinal health, nervous system regulation, and overall vitality.
When these two channels are in harmony, the body feels centered, resilient, and aligned.
Why Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is uniquely suited to working with the Extraordinary Channels. Its warmth penetrates deeply, reaching layers that need more than just stimulation – they need nourishment.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to safely and effectively apply moxa using a moxa stick to key points along the Ren and Du channels. This is not just about technique; it’s about developing sensitivity – feeling when warmth is enough, when it’s too much, and when the body begins to respond.
We’ll focus on :
- Understanding the pathways of the channels, their primary functions and pathologies
- Foundational points along the Ren channel for grounding, digestion, and reproductive health
- Key Du channel points for boosting yang, supporting the spine, and calming the mind
- Proper moxa distance, timing, and patient feedback cues
- Contraindications and safety considerations
- Integrating moxa into your existing practice or self-care rituals
A Practice of Presence
Moxa is not a rushed modality. It requires attention, patience, and presence. When applied with intention, it becomes almost meditative – both for practitioner and receiver.
This workshop is designed to be hands-on and experiential. You’ll leave not only with practical skills but with a deeper appreciation for how these ancient channels shape modern wellbeing.
