WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AN ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT

Acupuncture is one technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine whereby thin, sterile needles are placed in specific points located along the body’s energetic pathways. The intention is to promote healing and restore balance to the body.

Qi is believed to be a vital energy that flows through pathways in the body, in the same way that Prana is considered to flow within Nadi lines of the body according to Ayurvedic principles.

If there is pain in the body, stress, digestive or hormonal imbalances, the flow of Qi may be balanced or shifted via the insertion of acupuncture needles into the points along the energy pathways.

During an acupuncture treatment, you can generally expect the following :

1. Initial Consultation : The practitioner will discuss your medical history, current symptoms, and reasons for seeking acupuncture. This helps them understand your overall health and design a personalized treatment plan according to principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The initial consultation should include both a pulse and tongue diagnosis.

2. Preparation : You will lie down on a treatment table, and the acupuncturist will locate specific points on your body to place the needles. The points are chosen based on your symptoms and the practitioner’s diagnosis of your chief complaint and reason for seeking acupuncture.

3. Needle Insertion : The practitioner will insert thin, sterile needles into your skin at the identified acupuncture points. You might feel a slight pinch or tingling sensation, but it shouldn’t be painful. The number of needles and their placement will vary depending on the condition being treated and the practitioners preferred approach to diagnosis.

4. Needle Retention : The needles typically remain in place for 15-30 minutes. During this time, you might feel sensations such as warmth, pressure, or a slight aching around the needles, which indicates the treatment is working.

5. Relaxation : Many people find the treatment relaxing and may even fall asleep during the session. The environment is usually calm, with soft lighting and sometimes soothing music can be played in the background.

6. Needle Removal : After the retention period, the practitioner will remove the needles. This is usually painless and takes only a few moments.

7. Post-Treatment : You might feel relaxed or energized after the session. Some people experience immediate relief from symptoms, while for others, it may take several treatments to see significant results. It’s common to schedule multiple sessions for chronic conditions.

8. Aftercare : The practitioner may provide advice on self-care practices, such as dietary recommendations, exercises, or herbal supplements, to enhance the treatment’s effects.

Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified practitioner, but it’s important to communicate openly with them about your comfort and any concerns you might have before or during the treatment.
